Up to 25' tall. Boyce-Thompson Arboretum intro, Superior, AZ, 1930; originally from Japan. Pink buds open to white single flowers in late April. Generally upright stems with arching branches when mature. Very good tasting small dessert yellow-red fruit but big crab (about 1 1/2") persists through winter. Considered a good heirloom crab for jellymakers!
Brad Libby at the Lyle Littlefield Gardens in Orono curates the collection and wrote of this tree: “The fruit on that tree is quite special as it has wonderful sweetness and flavor, which is uncommon for a crabapple.” The old tree in Orono is in rough shape and in exchange for the scions we collected, we are returning trees to Orono to help keep the collection alive. Z4. Maine Grown.
