Charlottae Crabapple

bare-root trees
Malus spp.

10' tall with entwined limbs. Malus coronaria var. dasycalyx. Wild native seedling discovered near Waukegan, IL, 1902. Soft apricot bods open to light pink fragrant rose-scented very double 2" blossoms. Green-yellow 2" fruit.

In his classic Flowering Crabapples, John Fiala failed to mention that it was E. de Wolf’s wife Charlotte who found this tree. De Wolf described the flower as “entrancingly beautiful” with “masses of superb” blossoms. CS Sargent, first director of the Arnold Arboretum, took an interest in this crab after exchanging letters with de Wolf and receiving a box of perfectly preserved blossoms in June. He found a place for it in the arboretum. When Charlotte died in June of 1920, her burial was delayed a bit while her husband awaited “her” tree’s blossoms, which he used to cover her grave.

Seeds come true to type. Blooms late. Z4. Maine Grown.
