Prunus armeniaca
Mid-late summer.

Ancient hardy yellow-skinned apricot from Iran. Persians called it zard-alū, which means ‘yellow plum’ in Farsi.

Medium-sized pale yellow fruit is sugary with a large sweet edible almond-like pit. Fresh and dried apricots are featured in many Persian dishes, from savory rices and stews to sweet puddings and pastries.

Self-fertile and late-blooming trees need high chill hours to break dormancy. This gives us Maine growers hope of dodging late frosts that could zap the tender blossoms. Plum expert Bob Purvis reports that Zard trees have withstood –33˚ temps in Minnesota and still had a full crop! Z3.

(3-6' bare-root trees)
