Melba Apple

scionwood
Malus spp.
This is a twig for grafting. Late summer.

McIntosh x Liveland Raspberry. Developed at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, Canada, c. 1900. Released commercially in 1924.

Beautiful later summer fresh-eating, juicing and cooking apple. High-quality medium-sized fruit is round and somewhat ribbed with crimson blush and darker splashes. Develops a magical light blue bloom when ripe, looking like a Summer McIntosh, which is actually one of its synonyms. Flesh is bright white, firm, crisp and sweet with just enough tartness.

Named for opera soprano Nellie Melba, whose face is printed on the Australian hundred-dollar bill. (The Canadian breeder was a fan!)

Better scab resistance than Mac. Blooms midseason. Z3.
