Macoun Apple

Malus spp. Fall. NY 547 (McIntosh × Jersey Black) NY Stn, 1923.

This is an apple with a near cult following, even though practically no one seems to know how to pronounce the name. (It rhymes with town, not tune!) Especially good choice for those who like McIntosh but live south of Maine where Macs might not reach their prime. Medium-sized ribbed lobed truncate fruit, almost entirely covered with a dark purplish-red blush. The very juicy aromatic white flesh is crisp with a rich sweet flavor. Excellent for fresh eating.

Large vigorous upright spreading tree. Moderately productive. Although susceptible to scab, the fruit appears to be less affected than McIntosh. Macoun also shows some natural resistance to insect damage. Blooms mid-late season. Z4. Maine Grown. (Standard: 3–6' bare-root trees)
