4-6' tall.
Tall architectural clump-forming native wildflower features big soft terminal clusters of dusky-rose flowers held on beautiful wine-red stems that are dusted with a light purplish bloom. Leaves whorl in sets of 4 to 7, with slightly more rounded teeth than other Joe Pyes.
Foliage looks good all summer. Chickadees like to pick at the tawny dried seedheads in winter. Flowers can be used for dyeing.
Prefers moist soil and full sun. Plant it where it can naturalize—the back of a border, along the edge of a wood, or in a damp meadow. We planted ours as hedge right in front of the house. Readily spreads from seed and underground rhizomes, so plant it thoughtfully if you are working in a small space.
More adaptable to wet soil than other species, even by Joe Pye standards. Native to eastern North America. Z4. Maine Grown. (bare-root crowns)
