Early spring blooms.
A 16th-century heirloom, known as The Woodland Tulip, grown for Thomas Jefferson in his garden at Monticello. Elliptical slightly fragrant bright yellow flowers open with distinctive green exterior petals that mature to chartreuse. Often a good naturalizer, it is coveted in natural swaths in woodland borders, wildflower meadows and garden beds.
