2-3' tall. Also called False Dragonhead. Nifty little lightly veined 5/8" tubular flowers are lavender on top, pink on the sides, and white with deep purple speckles on the bottom. Look into their throats and you’ll likely find little spiders sheltering inside. Flowers are borne on terminal racemes atop the plant and atop each “branch” that grows in sets of two along the stem. This plant invites your inner child to play: You can move the little hinged individual blooms from side to side and they will hold their new position obediently. Narrow light green toothed leaves darken as they mature.
Blooms late July through September in central Maine, sometimes lasting until the first frost to provide late-season forage to pollinators. Deer seem to pass it by. Full to part sun, adaptable, prefers moist soils but drier soils will slow its urge to colonize. Tolerates clay. Native from Quebec to Manitoba, south from FL to NM. Z3. Maine Grown.
