Small pinkish-white flowers in spring. Small bright red drupe-type berries color up in late summer and persist into winter. Too insipid for fresh eating, but good fried with fish. Leaves are diuretic, astringent and antibacterial.
Prefers poor sandy infertile acid soils, tolerates salt. Can be sensitive to root disturbance, thus finicky in transplanting and may be slow to establish. Set plants 1–2' apart.
