Prairifire Crabapple

M. hupehensis seedling 20 × 20'. DF Dayton intro, Dept of Horticulture, U of IL, Urbana, 1982. Iowa Tree of the Year in 1996.

If you are going to plant one crab in front of a window for year-round beauty, this is the one. Considered to be one of the reddest flowering crabs. Crimson-red buds open to, small single deep red-pink flowers and ¼-⅜" persistent wine-red fruits that do not drop but will be hoovered up by hungry birds in spring.

The foliage matures from red-maroon to deep green over the season. One customer wrote us calling Prairifire “the prettiest thing you’ve ever seen.” Spreading rounded tree with graceful lateral branches. Rarely shows any problems from scab or other diseases. Z4. (Standard: 3-6' bare-root trees)
