Narrow and tall with twiggy branches, soft fibrous orange-brown bark, and flat foliage unlike that of any other conifer. Foliage and bark tea is high in vitamin C and helps fight infections. Twig decoction makes an antiviral antifungal skin wash. Valuable light fragrant wood, the standard for fence posts and log cabins in Maine. Slow growing, lives up to 400 years.
Good for screens and hedges. A favorite browse of deer. Pruning limbs and leaving them on the ground during a harsh winter helps sustain these animals and is a long-practiced tradition in the forests of Maine. Thrives in rich moist marshy neutral-to-alkaline soils. Z2. (18-24" bare-root transplants)
