Asclepias syriaca
Open-pollinated. Perennial to Zone 4. These 3–4' showy native wildflowers are an important part of the wild habitat. The leaves are the main food source for Monarch butterfly caterpillars, and 450 other insects are known to feed on some part of the plant as well. Can be toxic to some other critters, and the bitter taste will prevent voracity unless there is nothing else to eat. For humans, the flower buds battered and fried as tempura are a treat. Buds open to large balls of sweetly fragrant pink flowers. When the pods split open in the fall, seeds fly by impossibly soft silks. Prefers full sun. Needs periodic disturbance in order to compete with surrounding vegetation. 170 seeds/g. Especially attractive to pollinators.

From early May through October 31, items shipping from our garden seeds warehouse ship twice a week, usually Tuesday and Thursday. For quickest turnaround time order online by noon Monday or Wednesday.

We will not be fulfilling seed orders from May 20 - May 22 while we do physical inventory count. Orders placed by Monday, May 19 at 10am will be shipped before the break. We will resume normal order fulfillment on Friday, May 23.

Additional Information

Asclepias

Named for Asklepios, the Greek god of healing. Commonly known as Pleurisy Root, dried roots from the genus were traditionally used in small doses as an expectorant, anti-inflammatory and general tonic. Attracts all manner of bee and butterfly. Watch one of the miracles of summer unfold before your eyes as monarchs lay their eggs on the leaves—a nutritious food source for the resulting caterpillars.
